Odiyan is an upcoming 2018 Malayalam-language Indian fantasy thriller film directed by V. A. Shrikumar Menon in his feature film debut and written by K. Harikrishnan. It is based on the legend of Odiyan, who in Kerala folklore are men possessing shapeshifting abilities, who could assume animal form. Odiyans are said to have inhabited the Malabar region of Kerala before the era of electricity. The film stars Mohanlal in the lead role, with Manju Warrier and Prakash Raj; produced by Aashirvad Cinemas.
Production[edit]
Odiyan was announced by Mohanlal on 25 March 2017. It is the feature film directorial debut of advertisement filmmaker V. A. Shrikumar Menon and scripted by K. Harikrishnan. The film is produced by Antony Perumbavoor under his production house Aashirvad Cinemas and distribution by Maxlab Cinemas and Entertainments.[1][2] According to Shrikumar, the film is a magical realism thriller.[3] Production design will be done by Sabu Cyril, while Peter Hein will handle the action choreography, the art director is Prasanth Madhav, Shaji Kumar is the cinematographer and M. Jayachandran will compose the songs while Sam C. S. will compose the film score. The editing works will be done by Johnkutty.
Character looks[edit]
The first-look motion poster of the film featuring a younger Odiyan Manikyan was released earlier. He filmed the scenes of 65-year old Manikyan in the film's earlier schedules. For achieving the character look of the younger Manikyan, Mohanlal had to lose weight. He underwent physical training under a 25-member expert team from France.[4] In the 51-day long training session, Mohanlal lost 18 kilograms (40 lb) body weight.[5] A teaser-trailer featuring his younger look was released on 12 December 2017.[6] It received positive response, Mohanlal's effort for the transformation was praised by media outlets and people from film industry.[7][8][9]
Filming[edit]
Principal photography commenced on August 25th at Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh.[10] Mohanlal joined the sets on August 28th.[11] The other locations are Palakkad, Tazrak, Udumalaipettai, Pollachi, and Hyderabad.
Marketing[edit]
During the filming process, three teasers of the movie were released(as of December 14th, 2017). The first one featured Mohanlal conversing with the audience from the banks of river Ganga, describing his character. The second teaser released in November 2017 had Mohanlal confirming the completion of the schedule in which he portrays an older Manikyan. He teased the audience by promising to return in a leaner avatar soon.
Music[edit]
The songs featured in the film is composed by M. Jayachandran while the lyrics are written by Rafeeq Ahamed and Lakshmi Sreekumar. Shreya Ghoshal has rendered a song to the film. In November 2017, it was confirmed that Sam C. S. will compose the film score, which will be his debut in Malayalam.[12]
The film score is composed by Sam C.S., who makes his debut in Malayalam cinema after the Tamil film Vikram Vedha.
